Every year, NASFT issues its SOFI Awards - the Food Industry equivalent of the Oscars.  The sofi™ Awards recognize excellence in specialty food and beverages in 33 categories. “sofi” stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation. “The 2008 sofi winners are evidence that our members continue to create distinctive products that delight consumers,” said Ann Daw, president of the NASFT. “That is part of why our industry remains resilient in this challenging economy,” she added.

2007: Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science

Keynote speaker Patricia Karter, co-founder and CEO of Dancing Deer Baking Company, encouraged the class to “throw out the standard measures of success” and look inside themselves to define their own values. “Our beliefs in environmentalism, pure food, meritocracy, transparency and social progress were baked in from the start,” she said of Dancing Deer, whose preservative-free, artfully presented cakes and cookies use earth-friendly manufacturing and packaging methods. The company also donates a portion of profits to fight poverty and homelessness. “Search for the passion in your life,” said
Karter, who received an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree. “Follow your dreams, but while you’re chasing them, be building and refining your compass, and use it every day.”
