The Molasses Clove Cookies were REALLY good. My little boy proclaimed them as his 'favorite cookies ever'. - Robyn in Arizona

The Love Shack

Traditionally, I have not been a fan of Valentine’s Day.  I fell into that group of cynics that considered it to be purely a commercial holiday – another way for greeting card companies, candy shops and…well, mail order gift companies to earn more money.  I even read once that Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin on February 14th and I happen to be allergic to penicillin, so I figured it was a sign that I must be allergic to Valentine’s Day as well!

This year, I decided to make a comeback to the world of optimism and LOVE!  One cannot deny that Valentine’s Day is a holiday when companies like Dancing Deer promote their chocolate products and red & pink gift packaging.  However, this fact cannot take away from the spirit of love that is shared between the sender of a delicious Dancing Deer Sweetheart Tower (for example) and their deserving recipient.  It is a day to celebrate love of all sorts and if you want to send brownies to your sweetheart, friend, niece/nephew (or whoever!) to let them know you are thinking of them, then all the better!

To prove to my doubting co-workers that I was serious about my change of heart, I even baked a Valentine’s Day Gingerbread House (I like to call it the ‘love shack’ – original, right?).  And I used a Dancing Deer Gingerbread House Kit to bake it…of course (nobody said that they have to be baked in December!).

This Valentine’s Day, Spread Sweetness in your World.

An Irresistible Prejudice in Your Favor

“It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced–or seemed to face–the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.”

- F. Scott Fitzgerald

We had the good fortune this year to have Mark Real (pictured above) work with us as a seasonal holiday Deer. What that means is that, at a time during the Christmas holidays, when our volume spikes significantly, we hire the best people that we can find to help our customers with their holiday gifts.

If you were fortunate enough this past holiday to be helped by Mark, then you were greeted with “HAAAAPY HOLIDAYS. THANK YOU FOR CALLING DANCING DEER BAKING CO!” The word “Company” was never spoken; it was always “Co”. You then heard his infectious smile come through the phone with incredible velocity as he proceeded to listen to you with rapt attention, delightfully engage you with humor and then help you with the utmost care.

As I got to know Mark, I could not help but think of the F. Scott Fitzgerald quote that started this post. Mark is a true presence, a force of nature, and one of the kindest, most caring Deers that we’ve been privileged to employ.

Mark is regrettably moving on from Dancing Deer, as the season has come to end, but he will continue to serve as a role model for all of us Deers who were lucky enough to spend time with him and all future Deers who will come after him.

Thank you, Mark, for taking such good care of us and our customers.

There are so many good causes and generous people working for a better world.  We applaud them all.  Our main philanthropic focus is Family Homelessness.  In recognition of the devastation in Haiti, we are matching all donations made through this link to the disaster relief efforts of Partners in Health (through Valentine’s Day and up to the first $5,000 donated).  Homelessness in Haiti will be epidemic. We wish we could make meaningful contributions to all the thousands of good works around the globe.  But if all of us do what we can, collectively we will move humanity forward to a kinder and healthier world.  Thank you for your generosity.

With your help, since Tuesday, January 26, we have raised $10,960 for Partners in Health and their relief efforts in Haiti.  Thank you.

Super Fun Food Facts

My Favorite Fun Food Fact:
Formaldehyde is the stinky liquid that’s used to preserve dead laboratory animals. This chemical is what the artificial sweetener, aspartame, breaks down into after being eaten. (good thing all Dancing Deer products are made from ALL-NATURAL ingredients smile
Fun Food Fact #1:
Those mega-size apples and oranges you’ve been seeing lately at conventional grocers are pumped up due to added water volume, rather than fruit substance. This is a crop-yield technique by farmers designed to produce bigger fruit for more consumer appeal.
Fun Food Fact #2:
There is evidence that honey is the only food that cannot spoil. Archaeologists have tasted honey discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs, reporting that it’s edible.
Fun Food Fact #3:
If you could eat only one vegetable for the rest of your life, eat spinach; it’s one of the highest ranking vegetables as far as overall antioxidant capacity, yet so versatile in recipes.
Fun Food Fact #4:
Whenever a recipe for cake or muffins calls for oil, applesauce can be substituted.
Fun Food Fact #5:
Diet soda has not been proven to aid in weight loss. In fact, it’s been shown to actually increase hunger.
