Day 2 - April 23 - Athens to Georgia
Miles: 104
Weather: Sunny and Hot - about 88 degrees
Road Conditions: For the first 20 miles, Trish and Janet were accompanied by Athens locals who had the best scenic route, with rolling hills and green landscape. Then it was onto Route 78 - a two lane road for most of the way with little to no shoulder. There were few towns, few services, but nice scenery. About 10 miles before reaching Augusta, two lanes became six lanes, and we were on the highway. We reached the Salvation Army shelter that evening, and were greeted by a photographer from the local paper.
Highlights from the Crew's Perspective
At 6:45 a.m., Cyclist Bill, who we met the night before, took us up on our offer to ride with Trish, and he's ready to go! Janet rode her first century (YIPEE), and right after hitting the 100 mile mark, went over a nail and got a flat.
We have found two things to be true - fellow campers are as nice as can be, as are southerners. We got a tutorial in how to empty RV waste from a nice couple from Florida. However, the crew fell way behind the riders (22 miles off route) - a real no-no. Trish and Janet were in need of food and water refills. It won't happen again.
Ingrid, Della and Tiffany from the Salvation Army have been wonderful hosts. They were thrilled to have us and treated us like royalty. They gave us a one bedroom apartment to call home that is fully air conditioned. We have outlets for our many chargers!
We had a great turnout with mothers/children from the shelter and local church. Their gingerbread houses were fabulous.
