From Reverend Dr Colin Phillips,

President, Night Of Peace Family Shelter

Pastor, Salem United Methodist Church (where the shelter is housed).

Trish arrived 5.30pm at the Night Of Peace Family Shelter and was greeted by children and parents who are shelter guests. After dinner the serious business of decorating gingerbread houses began, which was a great success.

An interesting thing happened. Shelter workers, community leaders, shelter volunteers and visitors who were watching the families decorate the gingerbread houses began to network around current County issues. It was as though the dots were being connected, unexpectadly, because a group of people had been brought together by the Mothers Day Bicycle Ride who do not often meet. As they watched they also talked. It was a moment of great karma. Plans were drawn up to get mental health help for a Night Of Peace shelter guest, I received an invitation to a major Social Justice meeting, progress was made in securing new Board members for the Night Of Peace, plans were made for workshops on homelessness, ideas were shared for a Day Resource Center for homeless women, a community initiative on homelessness involving the faith community was further developed, and so the networking continued. Trish, unwittingly, had brought us all together, with extraordinary results!
