What a day we had yesterday! Our mission – get from Columbia to Charlotte in an RV. Clearly not a difficult task, especially since Amy, my pal who I recruited to come be my crew partner for a week, and I were traveling in our cozy RV. Ah, but life on the road is filled with surprises. The first surprise of the day, a flat tire. Now Amy and I have many talents, but changing an RV tire is clearly not one of them. So, I pulled out my handy folder of RV papers provided by the rental agent and called for help. In what seemed like no time at all, our very own Quick Tire Change Super Hero (picture above) arrived and saved us....

Onward we traveled. We stopped to wait for Trish and decided to fire up the RV generator to charge up some of our many pieces of technology. The hum of the generator created peace as it juiced up our gadgets. But then…oh no…a putter, and another, and finally no sound at all. YIKES! The generator was on the fritz again. I had to trade in our first RV upon arriving in Atlanta for generator problems, and here I was again. After numerous phone calls to the RV hotline, it was clear that the generator was not going to be fixed easily - hard to arrange for service on a Saturday when you are trailing a cyclist at 15 mph and trying to make it to a gingerbread house making event in just a few hours.

I’ve always been told trouble comes in threes. After the generator died, we pulled over to wait for Trish, and I realized that the outside storage compartment on the RV was wide open. Of course, it was filled to capacity with all sorts of stuff. Oh no! What was missing? A lot. I panicked, instructed Amy to turn around and head for where we last stopped. No luck – the missing goods were no where to be found. The delicious Dancing Deer chocolate chip cookies that were sustaining me, were gone. The box of extra gingerbread house making supplies was gone! And, our trusty bicycle repair toolbox that our dear friend Scott from Belmont Wheelworks had put together was gone!

By the time we reached Charlotte, I was exhausted! And then, we pulled into the parking lot of Charlotte Emergency Housing. Beaming smiles approached. The shelter staff greeted us with big hellos and hugs. As we entered the building, the warmth from my new friends, enveloped me, and all the stress of the day melted away.
