Biker rides to shed light on homelessness

April 24 2009

The Boston woman started a bike ride Wednesday in Atlanta that will stretch 1,500 miles over 15 days. She plans to visit 15 shelters by Mother’s Day and spread awareness about homelessness.

“We’re trying to get single mothers into permanent homes. The education can help,” Ms. Karter said. “I hope I can show that private businesses need to think about more than money. Their success is also measured in what effect they have on a society.”

1500 Mile Bike Ride for Homelessness

April 22 2009

Every year 600,000 families with more than a million children are homeless, according to the National Alliance to end homelessness.  The group also says that families make up half of the homeless population during the course of the year.  These statistics are prompting the CEO of a Boston-based baking company, Trish Karter, to go on a 15-day, 1500 mile bike ride across the country. Karter goes on to say “There’s a very fine line separating each one of us.  The homeless population is filled with people just like you and me who have encountered some sort of crisis in their lives.”

Riding Home for the Homeless

April 21 2009

AUGUSTA, GA - Trish Karter has never been homeless, but as the daughter of an entrepreneur, she knows what it’s like to live on the edge of poverty. She also knows that in the current economy, more and more families are slipping off that edge and into homelessness.  That’s why the CEO of Dancing Deer Baking Company, a socially responsible producer of all-natural cakes, cookies and brownies, decided to ride her bike from Atlanta to Boston — 1,500 miles in 15 days…

“The philosophical underpinnings of the ride were always to bring visibility to homelessness,” Karter said. “The population of homeless families is shifting right now. It used to be more women fleeing abuse, but it’s getting to be more of the working poor falling off the edge.”

April 20 2009

(NECN) - Trish Karter, co-founder of the Dancing Deer Baking Company, is setting out on a 15-day, 1,500-mile mission to promote positive social change.

The goal of the ride is to make a profound and lasting difference in the lives of families living on the edge of homelessness by raising awareness for the issue.

Trish will stay at homeless shelters, bring the Deers' tradition of Gingerbread House Making, and engage the public in a conversation about how to end homelessness along the way.

Trish joins NECN's Leslie Gaydos to talk more about the Dancing Deer Mother's Day Ride.

Successful Biz Takes Philanthropy on the Road

April 19 2009

Some entrepreneurs put their money where their mouth is. That characterizes Trish Karter, 52. As the owner of Boston-based Dancing Deer Baking Co.,  she donates a full 35 percent of the retail price of her Sweet Home product line to fund college scholarships for homeless and at-risk mothers. It’s part of Karter’s philosophy of running “a double bottom-line business,” and she’s been doing so since 2001. Her commercial bottom line hasn’t suffered: Dancing Deer is a $12 million company with 70 permanent full-time workers, plus the equivalent in seasonal employees.

This year, however, Karter’s doing more than walking the talk—she’s putting her advocacy on wheels. On April 22, Karter begins a 15-day, 1,500-mile bike ride from Atlanta to Boston to raise awareness and money to end homelessness. And because a majority of homeless families are headed by single mothers, she’s timing her ride to coincide with Mother’s Day. Karter’s a lifelong athlete who enjoys a physical challenge. So a bike ride on behalf of the homeless seemed like the perfect way to celebrate Dancing Deer’s 15th anniversary. With the economy the way it is, Karter says, “It’s more appropriate than ever to highlight the homeless crisis.”
